Approximately Up Multiplayer & Co-op

Up to four players online — roles, etiquette, and crew guides.

Multiplayer Hub

Approximately Up is built for online co-op with up to four players as much as solo engineering. Steam marketing literally sells the blame game: who forgot the cable, who mounted the thruster backward, who skipped the solar panels? This Multiplayer Hub collects co-op advice, role ideas, and links to deep guides so your crew launches together instead of arguing on the pad.

How multiplayer works

Invite friends through the in-game invite player flow while hosting a session. All players share the same shipyard context: frames to weld, thrusters to orient, logic gates to miswire. Flight is first-person from the deck, so not everyone needs a pilot seat — engineers can stay in build mode while one player flies, or multiple monitors can expose radar to a navigator.

Co-op uses online interactivity and in-game chat per Steam feature tags. Voice chat is typically handled through Steam overlay or external Discord — many crews prefer Discord for push-to-talk while building.

Demo and full release both support co-op at the same player cap; scope differences are planetary, not multiplayer — see Demo vs full release.

Why four players changes ship design

Solo ships optimize for one pair of hands. Co-op ships optimize for parallel tasks:

  • One player wires RCS while another sets knobs on six thrusters.
  • A navigator watches radar and calls range while the pilot focuses on attitude.
  • A mission runner reads objective log entries so the crew does not launch without cargo.

Oversized cockpits with multiple monitor lines become worthwhile. Conversely, tiny racers become chaos when four avatars block cable runs.

Detailed breakdowns live in Co-op guide, but the short version:

RoleFocus
Pilot3D joystick, fly mode, landing calls
EngineerPower, data routes, thruster orientation
NavigatorRadar, maps, mission waypoints
LoadmasterCargo, mission items, pre-flight checklist

Swap roles between planets so everyone learns wiring — future sessions blame less when skills overlap.

Communication habits that prevent crashes

  1. Call arming — “Entering fly mode in three” so nobody deletes a cable mid-throttle.
  2. Confirm RCS colors — green on the controller before anyone lifts off.
  3. Read objectives aloud — press O together before launch.
  4. Name stations — “We land at Earth North, not Moonstep.”
  5. Blame humor, then fix — the game encourages jokes; follow with a Thrust calculator check.

Solo vs co-op progression

Mission unlocks and station permanence apply to the host’s world state in standard co-op patterns — verify host rules in your session. Demo English-only UI affects international crews; full release languages help mixed-language groups — see Updates.

Parts unlocked through missions benefit the whole crew’s build options when sharing a save. Treat unlock grinding as a group project rather than solo grind if everyone wants tier S thrusters.

Finding players

  • Discord — LFG channels during demo extensions.
  • Steam Community — discussion threads for co-op partners.
  • Friends list — invite directly from the game UI.

No matchmaking roulette is promised; organize crews intentionally.

Four-player co-op guide — roles, communication scripts, wiring split, featured gameplay video, and surviving the blame game with your friends intact.

Multiplayer is Approximately Up at its loudest and best. Use this hub to recruit, assign roles, and link guides before someone “helpfully” mounts a thruster facing the cockpit.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How many players can play co-op?

Up to four players in online co-op, per Steam store features and in-game invite flow.

Is co-op available in the demo?

Yes. The extended demo supports multiplayer the same way as the planned full release.

Do all players need to own the game?

Demo hosts can invite friends who also install the free demo. Full release likely requires each player to own the app — confirm on Steam at launch.
